Mason City, Iowa, has quietly become a hidden gem for photographers, attracting both professionals from across the country and locals alike. The Historic Park Inn Hotel, The Stockman House, and the Cedar Rock Home are all designed by the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and offer a unique blend of architectural beauty and historical significance that photographers find irresistible. They just can’t get enough.

Photography Workshops

One of the reasons behind the hotel's popularity among photographers is the series of workshops hosted here throughout the years, and photographers have shared their expertise and passion for photography with eager participants. These workshops not only provide valuable learning experiences but also create a sense of community among photography enthusiasts.

Andrew Pielage, in particular, has made a significant impact with his workshops at the Historic Park Inn Hotel. In an interview with VisitMasonCity, he shared insights into Iowa's unique Wright architecture, offering a deeper appreciation for the area's architectural gems. Pielage has currently photographed 129 Frank Lloyd Wright sites for his #500fllwproject, which you can explore on his project timeline.

Participants in these workshops gain hands-on experience and knowledge from Pielage, who brings a wealth of expertise and an infectious passion for architectural photography. The workshops foster a collaborative environment where photographers can learn from each other, share techniques, and build lasting connections.

Looking ahead, Pielage plans to return to Mason City in the summer of 2025 for another round of workshops in partnership with the Historic Park Inn Hotel. Those interested in staying updated on new workshop opportunities can sign up for the workshop waitlist. Local Talents

Matthew Perkins, a photographer inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, has also found inspiration in Mason City. In his own words, "Mason City, Iowa, is such a special place and I love capturing photos every time I visit." Perkins' work reflects his deep appreciation for Wright's architecture, and his photos of the Historic Park Inn Hotel showcase its beauty and grandeur.

Perkins further adds, "I am deeply inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright in Mason City and beyond so I am glad to hear my photos have resonated in this way." His dedication to capturing the essence of Wright's designs is evident in his work, which beautifully highlights the horizontality and organic integration with nature that are hallmarks of Wright's Prairie style.

Another talented photographer, Jerron Davis, has also been drawn to the Historic Park Inn Hotel. His photographs capture the hotel's timeless beauty and architectural details, showcasing it in a new light.

Jerron’s admiration for Frank Lloyd Wright’s work began with a gift from his mother—a book titled "By His Design." Each page introduced him to Wright’s visionary creations, sparking a fascination that would shape his artistic journey. As an adult, Jerron’s home reflects his appreciation for Wright’s mission-style aesthetics.

For these photographers and many others, the Historic Park Inn Hotel is more than just a building; it's a source of inspiration and creativity. Whether it's the play of light and shadow on the hotel's facade or the intricate details of its interior, there's always something new to discover and capture through the lens.
